It sits in the back corner of our parking lot…
You may not even notice it….or even know it is there..
A small patch of paved parking lot that has been transformed into a highly productive garden sustainably feeding so many needy families.
The garden is run by the Northest Earth Coalition…NEEC. The group promotes urban-farming and sustainability, and is headed by Jose German-Gomez, a retired accountant. The coalition runs eight community gardens in Montclair, Passaic,Kinnelon,Paterson and East Orange. …and yes, OLMC is one of the Montclair host properties.
When it comes to gardening, Jose German-Gomez is a master of doing more with less. The eight community gardens he runs are small, but yield many hundreds of pounds of produce for the food insecure. Did you know that tiny garden in our parking lot supplied over 1450 pound of fresh produce for Toni’s Kitchen alone last year?
Below is the link to New Jersey Monthly Magazine’s September issue that features Jose and the gardens the NEEC runs. It is a worthwhile quick read.
OLMC is proud to help support the NEEC initiatives because they align with our values:
-Stewardship
-Community Well-being
The Community Outreach donates non-perishable food for NEEC’s food pantries as well.
